Saturday 13th November at the Mill Bar, Sixmilebridge was the venue for the launch of the 2005 Winter Music Weekend, Sixmilebridge Folk Club’s annual festival of acoustic music. Headlining was Declan Sinnott, and included in the impressive bill were Dublin’s bluegrass reprobates Prison Love, Hank Wedel and Ray Barron from Cork, and traditional and picker’s sessions. The whole lot gave a flavour of what’s in store on the second weekend in January when Sixmilebridge again hosts some of the best folk, roots, bluegrass and traditional music around, plus a little more in an intense programme of over 30 scheduled events.
On the Friday night 8th January, Freddie White brings his individual guitar style and distinctive voice to get the weekend off to a fine start at the Mill Bar. Bluesman Clive Barnes follows in a late gig, shared with the Broken String Band. Heading the bill for the Saturday is a concert by Nollaig Casey and Arty McGlynn, stalwarts of the traditional scene individually and together for twenty years and more. The Sunday night finale is headed by RíRá from Tuam, a session group who impressed all who heard them at the Seisiún na hEireann competition in Quin in September, and support is from Fada, a Stockholm-based outfit led by a son of Sixmilebridge Ciaran (Loughy) O’Loughlin.
The three-day programme is crammed with sessions and gigs in seven different venues, catering for all tastes. There is a classical guitar recital, a singers’ session hosted by Ennis Singers’ Club, pickers’ sessions, bluegrass gigs from the inimitable festival regulars Prison Love among others, a Jazz concert “Hot Club” style, and traditional sessions galore, with the cream of talent from Clare and beyond.
This is the sixth Winter Music Weekend run by the Sixmilebridge Folk Club, and the varied programme promises to entertain even the fussiest of music fans, whose only gripe will be that they may have difficulty choosing where to be at any one time!
